RanchLog how-to

Install or update RanchLog

Join the Play test the first time, install or update from the Play Store, and sign in so the phone can link a farm.

Before you start

Before you install or update, open RanchLog and let it sync, or make a backup.

A Free book stays on the phone. On a Ranch or Farm plan, RanchLog syncs whenever you open the home screen.

To make a backup, open Settings with the gear and tap Backup local data. On a Farm plan with a farm already linked, Settings also shows Sync now.

The Syncing and Backup and restore pages walk through both buttons.

Join the test (first time only)

You only do this the first time. If RanchLog is already installed from the Play Store, skip ahead to the update steps.

  1. On your Android phone, make sure the Play Store is signed in with the same Google account Jere added to the tester list.
  2. Open the opt-in link https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.pelicansoft.ranchlog and tap “Become a tester”.
  3. If it says the app isn’t available, your account isn’t on the list yet. Email jdelaune@pelican-soft.com.
  4. Then tap the “download it on Google Play” link, and tap “Install”.

Update to a new release

  1. Open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, then “Manage apps & device”, then “Updates available”. If RanchLog isn’t listed, search for RanchLog.
  2. Tap “Update”.
  3. If no update shows, wait a few hours after the release email. You can also pull down on the list to refresh, or close the Play Store and open it again.
  4. Still nothing? Clear the Play Store cache. Open the phone’s Settings app, then Apps, then Google Play Store, then Storage, and tap “Clear cache”.

If you installed RanchLog from a file we sent you

This is for a copy that was installed from a file we sent you (an APK), not from the Play Store. The Play Store version can’t install over that copy. You’ll see “App not installed”, or a message that the apps conflict.

  1. Back up first, and save the backup file somewhere off the phone. Backup and restore shows how.
  2. Uninstall the old RanchLog.
  3. Install RanchLog from the Play Store.
  4. Open RanchLog and restore the backup. On a Ranch or Farm plan, you can sign in and let the book sync instead. A Ranch or Farm book syncs when you open the home screen. On a Farm plan with a farm already linked, Settings also shows Sync now.

Check you’re on the new version

  1. Open the Play Store and open RanchLog.
  2. Tap “About this app”.
  3. The version listed there is the one installed on the phone.

Sign in and link a farm

  1. Open Settings with the gear.
  2. Under Account, enter Email and Password, then tap Sign in.
  3. New to RanchLog? Tap Sign up instead. RanchLog says “Check your email” and “Confirm your account if required, then sign in.”
  4. On a Ranch plan, go back to the home screen after you sign in so the book can upload. Under Subscription you’ll see “Sign in to upload”, “Not uploaded yet”, or “Last upload:” with a time.
  5. On a Farm plan, look under Shared farms. If this book isn’t linked yet, tap Create shared farm from this book, or enter an Invite code and tap Join farm. If you already belong to a farm, Shared farms shows Active with the farm name. When you can switch between farms, the farm name on the home screen says “tap to switch farms”.
